Summary:

Alfred Gatty and his wife Margaret arrived in Ecclesfield in 1839 where Alfred had been appointed vicar. But the family influence extended far beyond the parish boundaries. Alfred became an influential local historian, and Margaret Gatty became a children?s author of the first rank and an impressive marine biologist. The Gattys also raised a very talented family of four boys and four girls. Two of the sons were knighted and one of the daughters, Juliana Gatty, became even more famous than her mother as a children?s author. Joan and Mel Jones have researched the Gatty family history for more than 20 years and are the authors of two books and a number of articles about members of the family.
